Why this comparison matters
The SACCO-vs-bank decision is usually framed as folk wisdom — "SACCOs are always cheaper" — but that isn't automatically true for everyone, and treating it as a rule rather than checking the actual numbers can mean overlooking a genuinely better option. A long-standing SACCO member with a strong savings history may get access to a rate and borrowing limit no bank personal loan can match; someone who isn't yet a SACCO member, or needs the money faster than a membership/savings qualification period allows, may find a bank loan is simply the only realistic option regardless of rate. Comparing both side by side on real, current numbers — rather than assuming one is always better — is the only way to know which actually applies to your situation.
What are they?
SACCOs (savings and credit co-operatives) and banks both lend to individuals in Kenya, but they work differently. A SACCO is a member-owned co-operative — regulated by SASRA once it takes deposits — and you generally have to join, build up savings or share capital, and often stay a member for a minimum period before you can borrow, with the amount you can borrow usually capped as a multiple of what you've saved with the SACCO. A bank has no membership requirement: you apply, and the bank assesses you on income and credit history rather than a savings track record.
Neither option is categorically "cheaper" — it depends on whether you're already a SACCO member with savings built up, how quickly you need the money, and what rate each is currently offering. The tables below show real, currently-tracked rates for both so you can compare on the numbers, not just the reputation.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming a SACCO loan is automatically cheaper without checking the actual quoted rate against a bank's current personal loan rate.
Not accounting for the time it takes to qualify — a SACCO's savings-history requirement can rule it out if you need funds quickly, however good the rate.
Overlooking the dividend a SACCO member earns on their savings/shares, which isn't part of the loan rate itself but is part of the overall value of membership.
Comparing a SACCO's reducing-balance rate against a bank's flat rate as if they were the same figure, when the two produce different total costs.
What to compare
Eligibility and waiting period
A SACCO loan usually requires membership and a savings history before you qualify; a bank personal loan generally doesn't, but banks lean more heavily on payslips, bank statements and credit history.
Borrowing limit
SACCOs commonly cap how much you can borrow as a multiple of your savings or share capital with them; banks size the loan against your income and existing obligations instead.
Interest basis and rate
Compare the actual quoted rate and whether it's reducing-balance or flat — see the ranked tables below for both.
Dividends vs. no dividends
A SACCO member typically also earns a share of the SACCO's annual dividend on their savings/shares, on top of any interest paid — something a bank deposit account doesn't offer in the same way.
