How we source and verify our data

Every rate, fee and figure on WeCompare traces back to one of two places: a rate we sourced directly from the institution, or a clearly-marked illustrative sample used while we’re still onboarding a category. We never blend the two into one ranking.

Where the numbers come from

We are not scraping external sources. Real, sourced listings are entered from an institution’s own published rate sheet, product page or official disclosure — never estimated, inferred or copied from a third-party aggregator. Every real listing carries a source link (visible as “source” next to the rate) so you can check the original yourself, and a verification date showing when we last confirmed the figure was current.

How we check an institution is real

Before an institution appears with real data, we check its name against the public register of the regulator that licenses it — the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) for banks, the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA) for deposit-taking SACCOs, the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) for fund managers, the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) for insurers, and the Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA) for pension schemes. An institution that matches its regulator’s register shows a “register-matched” or “verified” badge; one we haven’t finished checking yet is marked unverified, and we say so rather than implying a confidence we don’t have.

Real data vs. sample data

Some categories are still being populated with real, sourced figures. Where that’s the case, every affected row carries a visible “Sample data” badge and is excluded from any “best rate” ranking — a sample row can never win a comparison against a real one. A category page tells you up front whether it’s showing real data, a mix, or template data only, and by how much.

How rankings are calculated

Within a category, we rank listings by their headline rate — highest to lowest for returns (savings, money market funds, SACCO dividends), lowest to highest for the cost of borrowing (loans, credit cards) — with the associated fee shown alongside so a low headline rate can’t hide a high fee. Rankings are recalculated from current data on every page load; nothing is a static, once-off “best of” list that goes stale.

How often data is updated

We update a listing whenever we reconfirm it against the institution’s own published rate, or when the institution submits a change through our partner process. The verification date on each row is the actual date we last checked — not a fixed refresh schedule — so you can judge for yourself how current a particular figure is.

How we’re paid

Some institutions pay a referral fee when a visitor is matched with them through WeCompare. This never changes the rate or fee an institution reports to us, and it never determines ranking order — see our advertiser disclosure for the full detail.

Nothing on this site is financial advice. Always confirm current rates and terms directly with the institution before applying.
